Gỗ chưa bao giờ thật sự đẹp dưới ánh sáng nhân tạo. Nó cần nắng — thứ ánh sáng thay đổi liên tục, không hoàn hảo và có nhịp thở riêng. Trong kiến trúc, mối quan hệ giữa nắng và gỗ không chỉ là vật liệu gặp ánh sáng, mà là cách thời gian hiện diện trong không gian. Mỗi vệt nắng làm nổi vân gỗ, mỗi bóng đổ khiến công trình trở nên ấm và “sống” hơn.

Trong kiến trúc đương đại, không tồn tại một hệ vân gỗ “đẹp nhất”, mà chỉ có sự tương thích giữa vật liệu và ngữ cảnh không gian. Gỗ sồi đại diện cho ngôn ngữ sáng, tuyến tính và tối giản; trong khi các dòng gỗ truyền thống Việt Nam như lim, gõ, hương mang sắc thái đậm, trầm và giàu ký ức bản địa. Mỗi hệ vân gỗ vì thế không chỉ là yếu tố thẩm mỹ, mà là một lớp diễn giải văn hóa được định hình qua ánh sáng, thời gian và không gian.

In contemporary architecture, there is no singular notion of the “most beautiful” wood grain, only the compatibility between material and spatial context. Oak represents a language that is light, linear, and minimalist; whereas traditional Vietnamese hardwoods such as lim, gõ, and hương carry a denser, more grounded character, rich with local memory. Each grain system is therefore not merely an aesthetic element, but a cultural layer articulated through light, time, and spatial experience.

Gỗ sồi không thuộc hệ sinh thái Đông Dương, nhưng thuộc hệ thẩm mỹ đương đại của Đông Dương. Trong kiến trúc, nó không mang ký ức bản địa, mà mang tinh thần nhập khẩu được bản địa hóa qua cách sử dụng ánh sáng, tỷ lệ và vật liệu xung quanh. Khi đặt vào không gian nhiệt đới, gỗ sồi trở thành một lớp Bản sắc mới: trung tính, ấm và rất hiện đại.

Mùi gỗ sồi phủ dầu không “đập vào” giác quan — nó thấm dần và giữ lại.

Đó là một lớp hương rất thấp, gần như nằm sát bề mặt vật liệu: hơi ngọt, hơi khô, có chút ấm của cellulose và dầu tự nhiên. Không sắc, không lan xa như nước hoa, mà ở đúng trong phạm vi cơ thể và mặt bàn — chỉ khi bạn ngồi xuống, đặt tay, cúi gần, nó mới hiện ra rõ hơn.

Về mặt cảm nhận, mùi này tạo ra một dạng ổn định cảm xúc. Nó không kích thích, mà làm dịu nhịp. Trong một không gian làm việc, điều đó có nghĩa là sự tập trung không đến từ căng thẳng, mà từ một trạng thái đều — giống như nền nhiệt ổn định hơn là một nguồn nhiệt bùng lên.

Điều thú vị là lớp phủ dầu không “che” mùi gỗ như sơn công nghiệp, mà giữ lại và làm sâu mùi. Theo thời gian, mùi sẽ thay đổi rất nhẹ — bớt tươi, thêm trầm — nhưng không biến mất. Nó trở thành một dạng dấu vết thời gian bằng khứu giác, song hành với những thay đổi thị giác trên bề mặt.

Ở góc nhìn kiến trúc, đây là một yếu tố thường bị bỏ qua: khứu giác như một lớp vật liệu vô hình. Với gỗ sồi, mùi không phải là phụ phẩm — nó là một phần của trải nghiệm không gian, giúp neo ký ức và tạo cảm giác “ở lại” lâu hơn bất kỳ yếu tố thị giác nào.

It operates as a low register, almost bound to the material’s surface: faintly sweet, slightly dry, carrying the warmth of cellulose and natural oils. Trong bối cảnh hiện đại, khi bê tông trở thành biểu tượng của sự bền vững và kiểm soát, gỗ dần bị đẩy về lớp hoàn thiện, thậm chí mang theo định kiến về độ bền trong khí hậu nhiệt đới ẩm. Một nghịch lý xuất hiện: chúng ta là một trong những quốc gia xuất khẩu đồ gỗ lớn, nhưng lại chưa thực sự tin vào gỗ như một nền tảng không gian sống.

Với góc nhìn nội thất, vấn đề không nằm ở việc “có nên dùng gỗ”, mà là dùng gỗ như thế nào. Khi được xử lý đúng — từ lựa chọn chủng loại, kiểm soát ẩm, đến hoàn thiện bằng dầu thay vì phủ kín — gỗ không chỉ tồn tại, mà còn già đi một cách có chủ đích, tích lũy thời gian như một lớp giá trị.

A paradox emerges: we are among the world’s leading exporters of wood products, yet have not fully embraced timber as a foundational spatial medium.

From an interior architectural perspective, the question is not whether wood should be used, but how it is deployed. When handled with precision—from species selection and moisture control to oil-based finishes rather than sealed coatings—timber does not merely endure; it ages with intention, accumulating time as an intrinsic layer of value.

Dưới góc nhìn kiến trúc, việc chọn gỗ sồi phủ dầu cho một chiếc bàn dài 10m không phải là quyết định về thẩm mỹ đơn thuần, mà là cách định nghĩa cách không gian được cảm nhận theo thời gian.

Gỗ sồi, với thớ gỗ rõ và cấu trúc đủ “lực”, cho phép mặt bàn giữ được sự liên tục ở một tỷ lệ lớn mà không trở nên nhạt. Nhưng lớp phủ dầu mới là yếu tố then chốt — nó không tạo ra một bề mặt hoàn thiện, mà giữ vật liệu ở trạng thái gần với tự nhiên nhất: hấp thụ ánh sáng thay vì phản xạ. Điều này làm cho chiếc bàn không “tách” khỏi không gian, mà trở thành một phần của nền cảm xúc chung.

Ở quy mô 10m, tính chất này đặc biệt quan trọng. Một bề mặt quá bóng sẽ phá vỡ sự liên tục thị giác; trong khi lớp dầu tạo ra một độ sâu mềm, cho phép ánh sáng trượt đều trên toàn bộ chiều dài mà không gây nhiễu. Kết quả là người dùng không bị phân tán, mà được dẫn dắt một cách rất tự nhiên dọc theo trục bàn.

Ngoài ra, gỗ sồi phủ dầu mang tính lão hóa có kiểm soát. Nó ghi nhận dấu vết sử dụng — những vết chạm, thay đổi sắc độ — nhưng theo cách tích lũy, không phá vỡ tổng thể.
