"Traditionally, if you let the tulip bloom and die back, the bulb will pull energy from the dying flower and foliage back into the bulb and store it, to enable it to bloom next year. Since we use the tulips for cut flowers, we cut the life source, so the bulb doesn’t have much energy to pull back in. There is a slight chance that it will grow and bloom again next year, but it must be stored properly until it’s planted again. This involves it being chilled in a cooler for the year, until it’s time to plant. It may just produce foliage with no flower the first year, then the following year, it may bloom. It’s not guaranteed. This is why, since we grow for cut flower production, we purchase new bulbs every year and compost our spent bulbs." T.J. Silva Earthbound Farmstand grower
