BREAKING: Several sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln have tried to jump off the ship due to horrific conditions during their extended deployment in the Middle East.

The ship has been at sea for nine months, spending a record consecutive 250 days without making land.

As crew members have endured long months without seeing their families or children, they have also faced severe supply shortages, lack of basic hygiene products, and poor-quality rations.

"Food obviously has been scarce," Nicole Conrad, whose son is a sailor aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, told NBC. "He’s told me there was a time where he was only eating half a cup of rice and two tortillas."

Families of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln are sounding the alarm about exhaustion, deteriorating morale and sailors reaching a breaking point.

Multiple sailors have reportedly attempted to go overboard during the carrier’s extended deployment. One sailor’s wife says her husband is now on medical hold after trying to jump from the ship. Another family member says her husband stopped a fellow sailor from going overboard.

The Lincoln has now been deployed for more than eight months and has spent roughly 250 consecutive days at sea, including 40 days of continuous combat operations. The deployment was originally expected to end in May, but there is still no publicly announced return date.

There are roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard. Thousands of people with spouses, children, parents and other loved ones waiting for them at home.

About 200 family members recently attended a meeting with Navy officials in San Diego. One spouse told officials that her husband had messaged her that very day saying he hoped he wouldn’t wake up the next morning.

Families have also raised concerns about food and supplies, broken toilets and laundry facilities, mildew and other living conditions aboard the carrier. The Navy has disputed some reports about conditions and says sailors have access to counselors, chaplains, doctors and other mental-health resources. Additional mental-health professionals are reportedly being sent to the ship.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt is being prepared to relieve the Lincoln, but officials have not publicly said exactly when that will happen.

Whatever your politics, this shouldn’t be partisan.

If sailors are so exhausted and distressed that people are trying to jump off an aircraft carrier, that is a flashing red warning light.

These men and women signed up to serve their country. That doesn’t mean their physical and mental well-being becomes expendable.

Supporting the troops has to mean more than saying the words.

Bring these sailors relief. Give their families answers. And take what they’re telling us seriously before another family gets the phone call they’re terrified of receiving.
