Pegu Tile, Burmese ceramics. 15th century

The glaze ceramic tile depicts a pair of Mara (Demons) who were going to destroy the Shakyamuni Buddha upon his enlightenment, but they failed. The ceramic was created and used to decorate the royal Shwegugyi pagoda, located near Pegu (now Bago), the capital city of Burmese Mon kingdom in 15th century - likely in the era of king Dhammazedi: year 1471–1492.

Based on the sizes of the pagoda and the tiles, some experts estimate that approximately only 150-200 pieces of such tiles were made.
