Everybody with advice doesn’t have experience. And everybody with a sober living home doesn’t know how to run one successfully. 👀
That’s a lesson worth learning BEFORE someone else’s bad advice costs you time, money, or your reputation.
We’re down to #2 of my Top 10 Reasons Sober Living Homes Fail: taking advice from unlicensed, unsuccessful sober living owners.
Be careful who you allow to teach you this business.
I believe in learning from people who have actually done the work, built the systems, dealt with the challenges, maintained standards, and sustained successful recovery housing.
Because sometimes the most expensive advice you’ll ever receive is the advice you got for FREE.
Surround yourself with experience, not excuses.
The right mentorship can save you from years of unnecessary and costly mistakes.
If you’re serious about opening a sober living home or strengthening the one you already operate, I offer one-on-one sober living consulting.

🔥 #2 down. Tomorrow we reveal the #1 reason sober living homes fail.
What do YOU think #1 is? đź‘€ Drop your guess below.

🏠A sober living home is NOT a landlord with extra rules.
Sober living is not just collecting rent and providing a bed.
That brings us to #3 of my Top 10 Reasons Sober Living Homes Fail: cutting corners or running your sober living home like a rental property.
The people we serve deserve more than a roof over their heads. They need structure, accountability, consistency, safety, trained leadership and an environment that supports recovery.
Yes, sober living is a business. But you cannot build a successful one by cutting corners on the very things that make recovery housing work.
Structure isn’t an expense. It’s the foundation.
If you’re thinking about opening a sober living home, or you already have one and realize you need stronger systems, I can help.

If your sober living home can’t run without YOU, you don’t own a system. You own a job. 👀
That may sting a little, but somebody needs to say it.
You can have a beautiful home, a heart for recovery, and residents who need your help, but if your policies, procedures and expectations aren’t written down, eventually something will fall through the cracks.
One manager says one thing.
Another manager says something different.
Residents become confused.
Accountability becomes inconsistent.
And suddenly, you’re spending your days putting out fires.
🔥 That brings us to Reason #6 in my Top 10 Reasons Sober Living Homes Fail: Operating without written policies, procedures or systems.
Your team shouldn’t have to guess how to handle curfew, incidents, documentation, house expectations or emergencies.
The goal isn’t to control everything. The goal is to create enough structure that everything doesn’t depend on YOU.
We’re almost halfway through this countdown, and #5 is where we’re going to turn the corner.

🚨 REASON #7: BELIEVING YOU CAN “FIX” PEOPLE.
This is one of the biggest mistakes sober living operators can make.
We are not here to fix people.
We can provide the structure.
We can set boundaries.
We can hold people accountable.
We can offer support, resources, and a safe environment.
But ultimately, each resident has to take responsibility for their own recovery.
When operators start trying to rescue everyone, boundaries get blurred. Rules become negotiable. Decisions become emotional instead of consistent. And before long, the entire house can be affected.
I’ve learned that sometimes the most loving thing you can do is hold the line.
You can guide, but you cannot rescue.
You can support, but you cannot save.
You can set standards, but you cannot make someone choose recovery.
Our responsibility is to create an environment where recovery has the opportunity to take root.
We’re counting down the Top 10 Reasons Sober Living Homes Fail.
#7 down. #6 is next. đź‘€

🚨 REASON #8: NO PROCESS, NO SYSTEMS, JUST REACTION.
A sober living home cannot operate successfully in constant reaction mode.
When there is no clear intake process, no consistent follow-up, poor documentation, and no accountability, eventually things start falling through the cracks.
And when things fall through the cracks, residents suffer, staff become frustrated, and the entire program becomes vulnerable.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in this industry is this:
Systems don’t take away freedom. Systems create consistency, accountability, and safety.
Your team should know what happens next without having to call you every time there’s a problem.
Your intake process should be clear.
Your documentation should be consistent.
Your expectations should be written.
Your follow-up should be trackable.
And accountability should be built into the operation.
If your sober living home can only function when YOU are there putting out fires, you don’t have a system yet.
We’re counting down the Top 10 Reasons Sober Living Homes Fail, and we’re only at #8.
đź‘€ Stay with me because #7 is next.

#10: Stop Filling Beds. Start Building a Culture.
A full house does not automatically mean a successful sober living home. The real question is: What happens after those beds are filled?
We’re counting down the Top 10 Reasons Sober Living Homes Fail, starting with #10.
#10: Focusing on filling beds instead of building a culture of recovery, safety and long-term success.
Yes, occupancy matters. This is a business, and the bills have to be paid. But when filling beds becomes more important than who you accept, how the home is managed, accountability, safety and recovery, problems will eventually follow.
I’ve learned that you can have every bed filled and still have a failing program.
The goal should never be to simply give someone a place to stay. The goal is to create an environment where people have the structure, support and accountability they need to heal, grow and move forward.
Success isn’t counted by the beds you fill. It’s measured by the lives you help change.
Stay with me as I count down from #10 to the #1 reason sober living homes fail.
And if you’re thinking about opening a sober living home, or you already own one and need help getting the operations right, message me. This is what I do.
