Designed and developed by Jordens Arkitekter, the architecture studio behind Jordens Hus, these homes bring together hand-hewn timber and exceptional craftsmanship with carefully selected materials, modern comforts and a deep sense of place.

Our chair V.A.P.01, both stackable and with armrests has find its place in this fine dining concept. VERK has also produced unique tables to blend in with the rest of the historic environment.

The chair designed by Simmer Global is a comfortable sturdy pine chair with an exclusive leather cushion produced by Kallfeldts Läder in vegetable tanned leather from Tärnsjö Garveri.

"At 78 degrees north, Huset (Huset Restaurant) is the world's northernmost fine dining restaurant. Set inside a building completed in 1951, once home to everything from a church and school to a cinema and concert venue, it remains the heart of the town. Now, the Svalbard landmark begins a new chapter with an extensive transformation by Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta (Snøhetta), which approached the project as a building shaped by leftovers, repairs and accumulated habits, where resourcefulness is part of everyday life.

The interiors are warmer than the latitude suggests. Stained oak, red linoleum and textile screens respond to the shifting light of polar night and the midnight sun, while sculptural furniture and a custom oak table sit alongside one of Scandinavia's largest wine cellars. In the kitchen, head chef Alberto Lozano (Albertolozanoaviles
Alberto Lozano Avilés) works with trappers, fishers and foragers, drawing on Nordic preservation techniques and whatever the fjords, tundra and seasons allow to shape the 14-course Arctic Experience.

Look at that shine!

Today we're carding lamb wool from Gotland sheep through the carding machine. The wool is later woven into our all-Swedish wool fabric, designed by Ingegerd Råman.

The fabrics shown in the images are examples of the upholstery options available for the sofa V.MC.01, designed by Mia Cullin.

The same fabric is also used for cushions for chairs and benches.

West Swedish brick, Swedish oak and split leather from Tärnsjö. At Stockholm's new cocktail bar Jokes Aside, design studio Verk has created an interior built almost entirely from materials sourced and processed in Sweden.

How difficult can it be to design a bar using predominantly Swedish materials? Far more difficult than you might expect, even in a country that likes to think of itself as a nation of forests and steel. That is precisely what makes Jokes Aside unusual. Nearly every material used in the project has stayed within Sweden's borders from raw material to finished product.

"In Sweden today, manufacturing is largely about assembling components," says Simon Anund, co-founder and Creative Director of Verk. "At best, imported products are put together here. At worst, they're simply repackaged."

Jokes Aside is the result of a collaboration between Verk, property developer AMF Fastigheter and award-winning bartender Johan Evers with his business partner Emma Wili-Blomé.
"It has actually helped that Jacop and I have been a little naïve," Anund says, referring to fellow co-founder Jacop Merlini. "Otherwise you never get anything done. Our starting point is often, 'How hard can it be?"

"Ultimately, it's a logistics problem. The value chains simply aren't there. Sweden has just one independent industrial-scale oak sawmill and only a handful processing birch, but hundreds cutting spruce and pine. Forest owners can't be sure they'll be paid for broadleaf trees, so they plant spruce instead. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle."

"I think the future lies in places where you can enjoy a sense of luxury with a clear conscience. Places where someone has already done the work of considering the carbon footprint, the food and the materials. Places where spending an evening has less impact on the planet than staying at home."

Opens on June 24 at Regeringsgatan 52. Stop by and experience it for yourself.

In a collaboration between AMF Fastigheter, VERK, and award-winning bartender Johan Evers, the venue is being built and designed as far as possible using Swedish raw materials and materials refined in Sweden.

Swedish oak from KG List, crafted into furniture by Enströms Möbler AB and Lammhults Snickeri AB. Bricks from the historic Horns Tegelbruk in Västergötland. Particleboard from Byggelitgruppen AB. Clay plaster and masonry by Brukspecialisten AB. Leather from Tärnsjö Garveri AB, refined by Kallfeldts Läder AB. Kolmården marble from Borghamns Stenförädling AB and quartzite from Älvdalen supplied by Wasasten of Sweden AB.
Our own wool textile, developed together with Ingegerd Råman, made from yarn produced by Ullkontoret on Gotland and woven at Väveriet in Bollnäs. Needle felt from Nordifa throughout the upholstery. Custom metal details manufactured by EVI Industries AB.

The reality is that building with Swedish materials is entirely possible. It simply demands a little more effort, a little more curiosity, and a willingness to look beyond the easiest option.

Perhaps it’s time to rethink what we associate with quality, exclusivity, and beauty. A handcrafted brick wall or a simple grey wool fabric may not fit the conventional image of luxury, yet these materials often carry far greater authenticity, longevity, and environmental value than veneered MDF clad in imported plush textiles and finished with brass details shipped halfway across the world.

Material choices shape how we experience a space, whether we notice them or not.

Located in Longyearbyen, with a long history as a gathering place for the mining community and limited access to fresh ingredients, Huset (the House) is a truly unique fine dining restaurant.⁠

Drawing on the deep traditions embedded in the building, as well as the constant shifts in light and landscape, the interior has been transformed to match the kitchen's culinary ambitions. The material palette builds on the building's existing character, where whatever materials available often have been used.⁠

Stained oak in two tones forms the foundation for fixed elements and bespoke furniture, referencing the coffered ceiling of the former cinema hall. Öland stone is carried through from flooring to counters and a large communal table, while red linoleum introduces warmth and durability, echoing the tones of the surrounding landscape. ⁠

Stainless steel adds a sharp and reflective contrasting layer, recalling the industrial heritage of Svalbard, while panels clad in transparent fabric creates a subtle moiré effect that shifts with changing light conditions and viewpoints.⁠

Considering linseed oil for an oak table? This is everyday use

Linseed oil is used to protect the oak while keeping the surface close to its natural feel.

Instead of creating a thick coating on top of the wood, the oil is absorbed into the material, bringing out the grain, colour variations and depth that make oak unique.

The result is a surface that feels warm, natural and develops character over time.

A Unique Project pushes the boundaries of how Swedish a build can be.

A new cocktail bar named Jokes Aside in Stockholm’s Mood District is being developed in an entirely new way.

In a collaboration between AMF Fastigheter, VERK, and award-winning bartender Johan Evers, the venue is being built and designed as far as possible using Swedish raw materials and materials refined in Sweden.

VERK, known for producing furniture in Sweden using exclusively Swedish raw materials, is now taking on its first project where the entire venue is also built using Swedish-made materials.

“This new cocktail bar is a milestone both for us at VERK and for Swedish material production as a whole. We hope the project can pave the way for others who want to set the same standards,” says Simon Anund, founder of VERK.

Through this initiative, the three partners hope to inspire others, share learnings, and contribute to a broader shift within the industry.

Jokes Aside opens at Regeringsgatan 52 in June 2026.
