Te Mātāwai was established in 2016 by Te Ture o te reo Māori (Māori Language Act) to revitalise the Māori language amongst iwi in the homes. Te Mātāwai works in partnership with the Crown under the public policy framework, Te Whare o te reo Mauriora, and upholds the framework’s Maihi Māori component.

If you’re in Gizzy on Monday 14 September, join us to enjoy live music from DJ CJ Houkamau, cheer on our tamariki as they compete in a competitive kī-o-rahi tournament for a share of the $3,000 prize pool, and get amongst the reo challenges, giveaways, and whānau-friendly activities throughout the day.

Kaikohe prepares to welcome Te Wiki o te Reo Māori back to town 02/09/2026

Preparations are well underway in Te Kaikohekohe to celebrate this year's Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori.

On Wednesday 16 September as an exciting addition to their annual hīkoi, Kaikohe and Hokianga will go head-to-head in a reo Māori rugby match. Haaaramai tētahi āhua! 🔥🏉

Ko tā Kīngi Rākete-Tane, "E rua ngā taonga ka nui te tata ki ngā ngākau o ngā whānau o te kāinga nei - ko te reo ka tahi, ko te whutupōro ka rua. Ka hakamoea ngā taonga e rua, ka p**a ake he hua tino ataahua hei ko tāku".

Nau mai e te whānau whānui ki Te Kaikohekohe, ki te whakanui i tō tātou reo, i tō tātou kāinga, i tō tātou iwi! Join our hīkoi in Kaikohe to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori on Wednesday 16 September 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🏁

The hīkoi will start at Northland College (62 Mangakāhia Road), and travel along Broadway Street, continue onto Raihara Street, and end at Papa Hawaiki (32 Recreation Road) . Then performances, giveaways and whānau activities will all kick off at Papa Hawaiki.
