DOC Summer Ranger | Matiu-Somes Island

The summer ranger position is based on Matiu and supports the Island staff to deliver the mahi during peak summer season. A number of kaimahi work on Matiu. There is a full time DOC ranger along with a part time cover ranger. Taranaki Whānui employ a Tangata Tiaki who regularly works on the motu. DOC ranger roles report into the Kapiti Wellington District Office.

The successful applicant will work on a rostered basis, including weekends and public holidays. During rostered shifts, you will stay in staff accommodation on the motu each night. DOC will provide a uniform, personal protective equipment, and appropriate footwear. Ferry travel to and from the motu for work purposes will also be covered by the Department.

You will have seen the news that bird flu (HPAI H5N1) has been detected in an ocean-going hākoakoa brown skua found in Pito-one on Wednesday 15 July and now a positive case in the Wairarapa. We know this news may be concerning, particularly for those with close relationships to te taiao, and for those exercising kaitiakitanga for our native manu, and on their whenua.

The most important message now is : please do not touch, move, feed, transport or attempt to rescue sick or dead birds.

A heads-up for uri in their final year of Civil Engineering or a related field. The Fletcher Construction 2027 Graduate Programme is now open, and the Alliance construction team has indicated they are looking for two to three graduates to work on Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi.

This programme is happening in our rohe, and Taranaki Whānui are an iwi partner in its delivery. This is a 24-month structured programme covering technical skills, health and safety, and personal development. Applications close 22 May 2026.
