Case Study | Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate School – Giving a Retractable Seating System a Second Life
When Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate School built its new gymnasium, they wanted to continue using the Hussey Maxam+ retractable seating system that had served the school reliably since its original installation in 2007.
The seating was removed from the old gym and stored while the new facility was constructed. Unfortunately, after it was reinstalled (not by Merje), it became clear the installation had not been completed to the required standard. The system looked tired, operated poorly and simply didn't match the quality of the new gym.
Merje was initially asked to assess the system, with the expectation that it would need to be completely replaced.
Following a detailed inspection, we reached a different conclusion. The core Hussey Maxam+ structure remained fundamentally sound, making refurbishment a far more cost-effective and sustainable solution than replacement.
Our refurbishment included:
• Complete disassembly and correct reassembly of the retractable system.
• Repair and replacement of worn components, including wheels.
• Replacement of all seating with new Courtside chairs featuring backs in the school colours and incorporating the schools WCI initials in the layout.
• New carpet fitted to the platforms and Steps.
• Powder coating of the original electro-zinc steel framework to provide a durable, modern finish.
• Full servicing, testing and commissioning.
The transformation was outstanding. The refurbished seating now complements the new gymnasium perfectly, delivering the appearance and performance of a modern installation while extending the life of an existing asset for many years to come.
The school's Principal commented that the finished result far exceeded their expectations.
This project highlights an important philosophy at Merje: the best engineering solution isn't always replacement. By understanding what could be retained, refurbished and upgraded, we delivered an exceptional outcome while achieving significant savings compared with a new system.
We're proud to have given this seating system a new lease of life and helped Wairarapa Cobham Intermediate School maximise the value of its investment.

This has been a long project for Merje from the initial meeting with Warren and Mahoney , Merje and Hussey Seating to start the design process in about 2018 until now, it's almost finished and it looks great with Hussey Maxam + retractable platforms and Bluecube Centura seats.

Stage 2 of replacement seating for the Palais Theatre in St Kilda, Melbourne. 570 seats were installed in Jan 2025 and in Jan 2025 we completed all the stalls with another 974 seats. Whilst the seats, manufactured at our factory in New Zealand are all new, the armrests are the original 1927 arms and we have reused the original caste iron Aisle panels, which were sandblasted and powdercoat in bespoke gold powder to match the originals.
