STRUCTURE NO. 01은 벽과 천장, 바닥을 동시에 지지하는 수직 폴 시스템을 기반으로 한 모듈형 가구이다. 목재 프레임과 금속 지지대가 함께 구성되어 있으며, 마치 건축물의 스터드 구조처럼 반복성과 견고함이 강조된다. 반복적 구조, 대비되는 한국 전통 소재의 재료, 정제된 디테일 속에서 건축과 가구의 경계를 허무는 조형적 실험을 보여준다.
공간에 강한 리듬과 중심축을 제공하는 가구이다. 특히 하단의 서류 혹은 음반 수납칸은 가구의 기능성을 확장하는 동시에, 조형적 허리를 구성한다.
STRUCTURE NO. 01 의 수직 폴 시스템은 한국 전통건축 양식인 주심포(柱心包)에서 영감을 받았다. 포(po)는 기둥 위에 끼워져 지붕을 떠받치는 구조로, 안정성과 미적 질서를 동시에 구현하는 전통 요소이다. 본 가구 역시 포의 원리를 차용해, 다리 위에 폴이 결합되며 상하 구조를 단단히 지지하는 중심축 역할을 수행한다.
중앙 박스와 선반은 유닛 구조로 설계되어 있어 사용자의 필요에 따라 자유로운 구성이 가능하다. 이러한 가변성은 공간의 흐름과 사용자의 삶에 유연하게 대응할 수 있도록 의도된 것이다. 특히 전면부에 적용된 자개 패턴은 수직과 수평의 구조를 가로지르며 리듬을 더하고, 전체 구성에 고유한 감각을 부여한다.
The vertical pole system of STRUCTURE NO. 01 was inspired by Jusimpo (柱心包), a traditional architectural style in Korea. In this system, po (brackets) are inserted atop columns to support the roof, serving both structural stability and aesthetic order. This furniture adopts the same principle: the poles are fitted into the legs, acting as a central axis that firmly supports both top and bottom structures.
The central boxes and shelves are designed as modular units, allowing users to reconfigure them freely according to their needs. This variability is intended to respond flexibly to the flow of space and the rhythm of everyday life. In particular, the mother-of-pearl patterns applied to the front intersect the vertical and horizontal structure, adding rhythm and a distinct sensibility to the overall composition.
This piece is especially meaningful as it is the first furniture work personally designed by artist Majeo Kim, and it marks her first use of mother-of-pearl as a material.
