A chest that carries more than storage.
An antique Chinese hand-carved camphor wood chest, believed to date from the 1930s–1950s, with an extraordinary level of hand-carved detailing.
The front and side panels depict traditional Chinese sailing junks moving through ocean waves, framed within intricate geometric relief work. A carved decorative panel continues across the lid, while the original-style brass/bronze drop-handle hardware adds to its character.
Crafted from solid camphor wood, traditionally prized not only for its distinctive natural aroma but also for its insect-repelling properties — making these chests historically suited to storing linens, blankets and silks.
And then there are the details you notice only when you get close:
the hand-carved bracket feet, the textured relief work, the aged grain of the timber, and the substantial circular latch plate.
