Kitchen canopies and extractors can be centrepiece features or nearly invisible. The choice is yours, but it's one worth considering.

Whether you choose a concealed design or one that makes a statement in the kitchen, here's how we think about it.

A concealed extractor can be recessed into the ceiling above an island or tucked neatly beneath a run of cabinetry. No canopy at all. For a very modern, handleless kitchen, this is often exactly what's needed. The extractor disappears meaning nothing interrupts the clean lines.

A slim stainless steel hood above the hob is the next step up. It's functional but not overbearing, offering a contemporary detail to any kitchen.

Then there's the painted, wooden canopy – a classic in a more traditional or countryside-style kitchen. Corbels, moulding, inset lighting, and a complementary splashback make it a feature in its own right, framing your cooking space.

Alternatively, you can now opt for downdraft hobs that draw the steam, smoke, grease and odors downward – just like the London house in the last image – freeing up even more storage space above.
