Running a small family business can be overwhelming...

And I think unless you’ve done it yourself, it’s quite hard to explain just how much goes on behind the scenes.

You’re ordering, selling, delivering, building, sorting problems, answering messages, doing paperwork, cleaning, organising, planning… and in our case, dealing with furniture that weighs approximately the same as a small house. 😂 I personally try to lift a chair and immediately feel like my neck is about to fall off.

Mathew is up at 6am most mornings, gets home around 7pm and will quite often still be working at 11 or half 11 at night.

It’s hard. It’s stressful. And sometimes you get so wrapped up in everything that needs doing that you forget to look around and appreciate what you’ve actually built.

Today was one of those days that reminded me.

We all went into work as a family. We laughed. We probably got on each other’s nerves at some point. 😂 The kids were there. Other families came in with their children. We watched little ones running around doing the mouse hunt, proudly finding their prizes. We chatted to customers, familiar faces and completely new ones.

Did everyone buy something? Of course not.

Do we care? Absolutely not!

Because somewhere along the way, this became about far more than selling furniture...

At a time when we constantly hear how difficult things are for small businesses, high streets and communities, and particularly here in Llanelli, somehow, we are still here. More than that, we’re thriving 🥹

And that is because of people.

Social media has played a huge part in building this business, but social media is just a platform. People built this business.

People who had never met us but followed us from day one. People who shared a post, recommended us to a friend. Left a lovely review. Walked through our doors. Came back years later. Told somebody else about us. And every single week, somebody new seems to find us and joins that little community.

It’s very easy to lose sight of how incredible that actually is.

Today felt grounding.

Yes, running a family business is exhausting. Yes, sometimes it is unbelievably stressful. And yes, there are days when we probably wonder what on earth we're doing. 😂

But we also get to work together... Our children get to grow up seeing what we’ve built. We get to know the people we serve. We get to watch other families walk through our doors and feel comfortable enough to let their children run around doing a mouse hunt while they browse.

We get to be part of our community 🩷

And that is a pretty special thing.

So today was just a little reminder to ourselves to stop occasionally and appreciate it.

Things can be hard and still be good.

And today, things felt really good.

We completely understand there’s a risk of making the journey and finding it’s already gone, and we know that can be frustrating. However, as an incredibly busy business, first come, first served is genuinely the only manageable way for us to keep doing this.

We regularly have organisations and charities who would happily take these items from us in one go, which would be far easier for us, but wherever we can, we’d rather give people in our local community the opportunity to have them completely free of charge. We know that even charity-shop prices aren’t affordable for everyone.
