The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has launched a scathing attack on the government over a proposed school infrastructure deal, alleging that Botswana could be committed to more than P20 billion over 20 years for a project the party claims could cost approximately P3.6 billion to build.

In a strongly worded statement, BCP Secretary for Publicity and Information, Olebile Machete, described the arrangement as an urgent threat to public finances and called for its immediate scrutiny.
The party has raised questions about the proposed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) involving African Hero, alleging that the government could pay close to P200 million per school over 20 years for schools it claims cost about P36 million each to construct.

The BCP further questioned how the project was allegedly revived after what it says was an earlier rejection by the Ministry of Finance on grounds that it was too costly. Among its demands, the BCP wants the government to publicly disclose all agreements, guarantees, land allocations and payment schedules linked to the project.

It has also called for an urgent Parliamentary inquiry, demanding that officials explain the process that led to the deal's approval. The party says it will meet with civil society, labour and other stakeholders from 14 to 18 September 2026 to map out what it describes as a national response.

โ€œBatswana did not vote to be billed for someone elseโ€™s political debt,โ€ the BCP said.

The allegations and claims contained in the statement are expected to intensify debate around the proposed school infrastructure programme and the government's handling of major PPP projects.

Supporters came out in large numbers this morning as former Transport and Infrastructure Minister Noah Salakae and his co-accused appeared before the Broadhurst Magistrates Court.

The courtroom was packed to capacity, with an overflow of people outside the courtroom. Many of those who attended were from Salakaeโ€™s constituency, turning the court appearance into a significant public spectacle.

Inside court, the State asked for plea to be reserved, saying it intends to amend the charge sheet to include another accused person.

The State also did not oppose bail, proposing P10,000 bail and two Batswana sureties for each accused.

For Seby, a foreign national, the State proposed P30,000 bail, surrender of his passport and monthly reporting to the DCEC office in Ghanzi.

The matter has been postponed to 9 October 2026 for mention.
