“Nothing changes anyway. Why bother engaging with EU decision-makers on fatigue?”

We hear this a lot. But according to ECA Deputy Secretary General Philip von Schoppenthau, engaging with decision-makers isn’t just worth it, it’s essential.

In his latest article, Philip explains what ECA has been doing to push for better fatigue rules and implementation, and what has been achieved so far.
But there’s still a long way to go. And to keep pushing for change, we need data and evidence from you, the pilots.

If you haven’t filled in the ECA Fatigue Survey, please take 5 minutes to do so before it closes.

If you haven’t completed it yet, there’s still time to share your experience and help us understand fatigue across European aviation.

It takes around 5 minutes to complete.

Take the survey before it closes.

Roster stability, Commander’s Discretion, fatigue… Those are the buzzwords in the pilot community this summer, as we have entered an intensive summer of flying.

Please fill in this Europe-wide Pilot Fatigue Survey!

It will help us to get a better understanding of the levels of fatigue in European aviation this summer – and how it is managed by your airlines. And it will help us to pinpoint to EASA and to national authorities where the bottlenecks are and how to better manage fatigue in Europe.

The survey is anonymous, takes you +/- 5 minutes to fill in, and has been developed in cooperation with fatigue risk management experts from Baines Simmons.

Europe needs data, evidence and reporting.

This is why we have launched a Europe-wide Pilot Fatigue Survey: to get the data & evidence that underpins our arguments towards the EU, EASA and politicians. Your data, your professional pilot judgement is what we need.

Take the survey and help us build a clearer picture of fatigue in European aviation. Link in bio.

Fourteen years later... has anything really changed?
If you’re a pilot, fill in the ECA fatigue survey. Help us understand fatigue levels in Europe’s aviation this summer and how your fatigue is managed by your airline.

Policy looks different from the cockpit!

Earlier this week ECA welcomed European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas: first in the simulator, then around the table.

We discussed various aspects of the upcoming aviation strategy and something Europe’s pilots see every day: the gap between how aviation works on paper and how it works in practice.

That’s why pilots need to be in the room when decisions affecting aviation are made and not after the policy is written, not only when something goes wrong. The simulator made the same point a different way: operational reality matters.

Thank you, Commissioner Tzitzikostas, for engaging directly with Europe’s pilots and for stepping into our world for an evening.

Pilots need tools, not slogans.
Our new Defensive Flying Checklist helps you recognize and resist unsafe operational pressure:

Are you alert enough to fly?
Is the pressure you’re feeling operational, commercial, or emotional?
Are you being expected to compensate for poor planning?
Use this checklist to ground your decisions in safety, not guilt or pressure. Send a copy to your colleagues!
