Our small team is growing, and we thought it was time you got to know the people behind the scenes a bit better. As our leader and director, Karl volunteered to go first (he didn’t) and share a bit more about his journey starting KDM and his why.

This renovation and extension is well underway, and it’s starting to come together as we transform the existing home into a space that works better for our clients and the way they live.

Choosing a builder is a big decision, and we completely understand why price plays a huge part in it.

But when you’re comparing quotes, the cheapest number at the bottom of the page isn’t always the cheapest option overall.

A lower quote can sometimes mean there are things that haven’t been accounted for yet, selections haven’t been finalised, or important details haven’t been properly considered.

That’s why we encourage our clients to look beyond the final figure and ask:

✔ What’s actually included in the quote?
✔ Has the scope of work been clearly defined?
✔ Have the selections and finishes been considered?
✔ Are there any potential additional costs that haven’t been allowed for?
✔ How will variations be communicated?
✔ Who will actually be managing the project day to day?

For us, getting the price right starts with doing the planning properly upfront.

We would much rather spend more time understanding your project, asking questions and identifying potential costs before construction starts than give you a low number just to win the job and work out the details later.

Because when you’re investing in your home, you want to know what you’re paying for.

So it may be controversial to say but we’re not interested in being the cheapest builder in the room. We’re interested in being the builder who is upfront about what your project will actually take to do properly, and who will help you make smart decisions with your budget along the way.

Demolition is underway, and we’re officially kicking off a new home extension this month.

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learnt over the years had nothing to do with building.

It was about communication.

Early on, we’d send through the proposal and contract, answer any questions that came up and move forward with the project.

What we realised was that even when everyone had the best intentions, sometimes our understanding and the client’s expectations didn’t line up exactly. That could lead to unnecessary conversations later on that could have been avoided from the start.

Now, before anything is signed, we sit down together and go through every detail of the proposal and contract in person.

We make sure we’re all on the same page about what’s included, what the finished outcome will look like and how we’ll handle anything unexpected if it comes up during the build.

It takes a little more time upfront, but it saves a lot of confusion later.

Building a home is a big investment, and we believe you should feel completely confident about what you’re signing before we ever pick up the tools.
