What does "Australian Made" actually mean?

It’s a question more consumers, designers, and specifiers should be asking.

If a product’s frames, foam, plastics, and key structural components are manufactured overseas; and only the final cutting, sewing, or assembly happens in Australia; should it truly be considered Australian Made?

For many, the answer is no.

When the majority of materials, labour, and manufacturing value comes from offshore, Australian Made claims can be misleading.

Perhaps a more accurate term would be:
“Assembled in Australia.”

That’s why it’s so important to look beyond the label and ask:
• Where are the frames made?
• Is the foam Australian made?
• Where are the materials sourced?
• How much of the product is genuinely produced here?

At Artifex Australia, every piece we produce is built here in Australia.

We use Australian made foams, manufacture our own timber and metal components using Australian made materials, complete all sewing and upholstery locally, and customize every piece to suit individual client needs.

This means:
• More Australian jobs
• Supporting local skills and helping address skill shortages
• Greater quality control (including foams that meet Australian standards)
• Faster, reliable local support
• Genuine investment in Australian manufacturing
• Lower carbon footprint through reduced overseas production and freight

Real Australian manufacturing creates far greater economic benefit, stronger local industries, and better long-term outcomes for both consumers and the environment.

Consumers deserve transparency.

Because Australian Made should mean more than just final assembly; it should represent genuine local craftsmanship from start to finish.
