World Wood Day- 2016.

The 2016 World Wood Day theme "Nature & Culture" draws inspiration from the core concept of World Wood Day (WWD). That concept is to raise awareness of wood as an eco-friendly renewable biomaterial and demonstrate the key role of wood in a sustainable future. The theme will explore the interrelationship between nature and culture that influence the way we use wood in our daily lives.

MAIN EVENT - NEPAL ACADEMY, KATHMANDU, NEPAL

The main international celebration will take place in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal during the week of 21 March 2016. Nepal is chosen as the host country for the main celebration because of its diversity, both geographically and culturally. Also, the city of Kathmandu is named after the Kasthamandap Temple, which in Sanskrit means "wood covered shelter" and, as legend has it, the Temple was made from a single tree. Participants for this international event are expected from over 100 countries and regions, which will help draw attention to the nation's determination to recover from the devastating earthquakes in 2015 as well as focus on Nepal's unique wood culture. This week-long event will feature a symposium, woodcraft activities, design and architecture programs, folk art workshops, children's events, musical festival and a tree planting.

'Humans have a direct evolutionary relationship with trees. Plants, through their chlorophyll, produce almost all of the oxygen we breathe. As well, trees suck up huge quantities of rainwater that would otherwise flow back to the sea. In a single day a large rainforest tree can pump over 1,000 liters of water into the atmosphere. Rainforests represent a cradle of biodiversity, essential for sustainability of all forms of life. Less than 0.12% of Australia's land mass is now covered by rainforest- once upon a time that figure was 60%. In a recent paper presented to the International Wood Anatomists Society by the Australian National University and the University of Papua New Guinea, it is estimated that with the massive escalation, of mostly illegally harvested rainforest hardwoods, throughout most of the tropical regions of SE Asia, and now the recent re-escalation in South America, more than 80% of the world's rainforests will be gone by 2025 at the latest. The impact of this is huge, including predominantly, reduced biodiversity and rainfall'. (Australian Wood Review, issue 88).

Apart from planting more trees, what can the average person do to at least not contribute to the world's deforestation? Consuming less is a start, and buying wood and quality wood products certified as sustainably harvested is another step. But also for people (more so woodworkers) to learn more about wood species and how to identify them, while endeavouring to seek out reliable sources. We have a responsibility to future generations. Sharing knowledge is always the first step.
