Hassan Yasini’s debut solo “Mycelium” opened last Saturday at Everyday Lusaka Gallery.

“In ‘Mycelium’, we observe a practice that extends across field, studio and marketplace, where farmer, entrepreneur, and artist cease to be separate identities and become part of the same living system.

‘Mycelium’ is ambitious, reaching for eternity by starting a movement; a lifestyle that defies drought, decay, desire and perhaps even death.

If we are all one interconnected system then decomposition is alchemy, changing our form but never destroying us.”

On Saturday 8th August, following Farmer’s Day and the 98th Lusaka Agricultural Show, we open our new exhibition – "Mycelium” – a solo exhibition by Hassan Yasini which explores the connections between agriculture and art.

Curated by Sana Ginwalla, with writing by Mukandi Siame, “Mycelium” is the culmination of years and research where Yasini shares his discoveries and experiments between two fields of practice he continually balances: farming and printmaking. Building on the idea of interconnected networks like that of mycelium, Yasini highlights the role of creativity in survival. Printmaking offers a form of documentation – preserving memory and communicating how the seemingly mundane acts of growing, storing, and consuming food can give rise to creativity.

In a time where Zambia’s political, geographic and economic landscape is rapidly shifting, Yasini transforms Everyday Lusaka Gallery into a space that invites us to think critically about food sustainability, and not just food security.

“In 1888, Cecil John Rhodes duped King Lobengula, leader of the Ndebele kingdom, into signing the Rudd Concession, essentially handing over mining rights to the British South African Company, paving the way for the colonisation of present-day Zimbabwe. One of the many things promised to King Lobengula in exchange for signing the concession was a boat, which he never received.”

“Sometimes I think people come into your life for a reason, fate, destiny, serendipity, whatever you want to call it. Solomon was one of those people. I picked him up on the road into Kariba one evening when he was trying to get into work, at Kariba Prison where he was a deputy warden, and we immediately bonded over a mutual love of our favourite Thomas Mapfumo song ‘Nyoka Musango’ - which just so happened to be playing when he got into the car.

When we agreed to meet up a few days later it quickly became obvious that Solomon knew almost everyone in town no matter where we went. Handshakes, big smiles, loud jokes, music requests: people knew when Solomon arrived. He introduced me to everyone as his brother and soon I was one of them. There wasn’t a place nor person that I felt uncomfortable around with Solomon by my side. It was through Solomon that I met Moab and Willard and together, that became our seriously motley crew - Solomon the prison warden, Moab the mechanic, Willard the Rasta, and Jono the murungu (white man). They became my close friends, my Kariba family and it was largely through them that I began to experience and understand a different side to Kariba, outside of the holidays, and the days on the lake.”

“During construction of the Kariba dam wall there were two once in a lifetime events - the ‘once in hundred year’ flood, and the ‘once in a thousand year’ flood. The latter delivered catastrophic damage and brought the construction of the Kariba dam wall to a standstill. The road bridge was washed away and the suspension bridge, which had been 35 meters above the water and connected both sides of the gorge, writhed like a snake when the water touched it and that too was washed away. The main cofferdam developed a hole and was flooded from within.

Both of these disasters were attributed to NyamiNyami’s wrath, and according to one source a white goat was slaughtered and left to drift down the Zambezi River to appease him. Ultimately, he would become separated by the wall from his wife downstream and his struggle to reunite these two halves echoes a Tonga anthem which laments for their wailing ancestors, heard across the flooded valley, lost in a place now unrecognisable to them.”
