Symbol X Maple No. 13 has a cool silver-gray oxidation achieved through tea tannins and a traditional mordant process, sealed with tung oil. Horizontal landscape-like banding interacts with softer tiger figure below, creating a balanced and tranquil surface with a pronounced shimmer in natural light.

Symbol X Maple No. 14 is a restrained, natural presentation of the maple itself. Minimal intervention—only tannin enhancement and tung oil to reveal the inherent figure. The result is clean, honest, and close to the raw material, with subtle knots and character marks preserved. We are pleased to introduce the latest edition of the Symbol X: Symbol X Maple, crafted in highly figured New England Maple.

We spent months scouring for the right batch of locally sourced maple that has a particular type of grain. It goes by many names: tiger, curly, flamed, and fiddleback (as it’s a prized material for fine instrument makers). Once we finally procured enough for a batch, we set about creating each piece to have its own unique finish.

We home-brewed mordants, dyes, and various other concoctions to achieve a variety of effects. Some applications took multiple steps of applying and sanding back to just a hint of color, highlighting the shimmer inherent in this unique type of grain structure, known as chatoyance. Dyes and oxidation solutions added layer upon layer, sometimes looking totally wrong before it looked totally right.

Our hearts are with Los Angeles during this devastating time as fires continue to ravage the area. The scale of destruction is unimaginable, and the road to recovery will be long and challenging. Many have lost everything, and our thoughts are with all those affected.

Though we have called Southern Vermont home for the past 15 years, and previously Brooklyn, our roots remain deeply tied to Los Angeles. David E. Scott founded DESU DESIGN in 1995 in LA, following his time at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC). In those early years, DESU primarily served as an architectural metals fabricator, collaborating with firms that would go on to shape the architectural landscape of today. At the same time, our earliest product designs laid the foundation for what would become the DESU product line.

We hope that our contribution, along with the collective efforts of others, will help provide some relief and support for those affected by the fires. Together, we will help rebuild and recover. Thank you for joining us in this effort.
