He personally checked in on David every semester until graduation. Labor Day was the product of a broader late-19th-century labor movement, and the Pullman Strike helped accelerate and shape the political circumstances surrounding its federal recognition.
The Pullman Strike of 1894 played a role in the timing and political context of the federal recognition of Labor Day. Congress passed the legislation on June 26–28, 1894, while the Pullman strike and the American Railway Union boycott were unfolding. President Grover Cleveland signed it on June 28, 1894.
