Right before we start, we’d like to say a huge thank you to - WOK - for supporting Semiofest Warsaw 2026 and helping us organise our Day 0 Workshops in such an iconic location - MDM.
MDM is a 1950s neoclassical complex shaped by the principles of socialist realism - a remarkable part of Warsaw’s post-war cityscape - and we’re genuinely excited to bring semiotic work into a space with that much history and meaning.
Thank you Małgorzata Bakalarz Duverger, PhD and Agata Heft for your kindness, trust, and support throughout the process. We really appreciate it 💛

💥 Watch out! Passes are really running low, but we’re back with another look inside the Semiofest Warsaw 2026 program, and we’re starting in the most intuitive place. ✨
When we say “viscosity,” most of us feel it before we think it, as something material, thick, sticky, resistant, slow-moving. That’s why Viscous Materiality is the perfect place to start. It grounds the theme in textures, substances, and objects you can almost feel through the examples. 🫠
Viscous Materiality block looks at how meaning gets carried by substances, textures, patterns, and products. How it can cling, accumulate, and re-attach through what things are made of and how they behave. It’s semiotics with your hands on the world - biomaterials, fabrics, gels - the material layer where culture becomes tangible. ✋
In the Viscous Materiality block:
⚡ Max Matus & Akvile Sataite will explore how brands communicate biomaterials across the U.S. 🇺🇸🌿 and how to build narratives that bridge the tension between the “natural” and the “synthetic” as we enter an increasingly synthetic era.
⚡ Anne-Flore MAMAN LARRAUFIE, PhD will trace the journey of Vichy checks from 19th-century France to today 🧺👗 showing how a pattern can become a sticky icon, thick with layered histories, yet able to attach itself to new contexts again and again.
⚡ Giacomo Festi will take us into the everyday world of detergent gels 🧼🫧 showing how viscosity is communicated through imagery, touch, use, and how material behaviour itself can carry meaning, taking a step “beyond Barthes” toward a material semiotics.
If you like semiotics that pays attention to what culture is made of and how material qualities quietly signify, this block will definitely be treat. 👀🧠

🖖 We’re back with another look inside the Semiofest Warsaw 2026 program and this one digs into the digital realm most of us move through every day.
Digital Gooey 🫠💻🕸️
Would you agree that the digital, the algorithmic, the virtual, can be unbelievably sticky? On the first day of the Main Event (21 May), we’ll explore how these layers of reality cling to attention, set norms, and resist letting go.
This block puts the viscosity metaphor to work where culture is increasingly made - platforms, feeds, interfaces and designed worlds. In other words, how the digital doesn’t just carry meaning, but helps set the conditions for what gets noticed, repeated, and believed.
🌀Nimesh Nambiar treats the “hot take” as a tiny but potent unit of meaning, a heat-spike that pulls attention in fast, makes discourse stick, and can quickly thicken into dense, polarised narratives that are hard to shift (before cooling, loosening, and flowing on).
🌀 Henryk Klawe explores the viscosity of interfaces - showing how UX patterns (scroll, swipe, autoplay) work as sign systems that regulate attention and behaviour, training habits over time, and offering a practical way to map where friction is ethical and where stickiness becomes a trap.
🌀 Kacper Latecki takes us into swampy visual worlds and jelly ontology - showing how meanings and metaphysical residues keep returning and sticking in brand and visual culture, beyond the old solid/liquid story of modernity.
If you’re trying to understand why the digital layer feels so immersive, so adhesive, and so culturally powerful right now, this block will give you the sharpet insights and plenty to talk about in the room. 😵💫
Keep a eye on this space for more speakers from the other blocks soon, including Viscous Materiality, Substance of Care, and Ethics Between Solid and Fluid, plus the workshops across the event.

👋 Continuing our series introducing the thematic blocks and the speakers behind them at Semiofest Warsaw 2026.
Next up: Thick Culture 🍯
This is one of the most culturally grounded blocks in the programme. We’ll be diving into the dense, deep sign structures that quietly organise our social lives, the stuff embedded in institutions, rituals, shared values, and everyday “common sense”, we often take for granted as simply “natural.” 🪞
When you start seeing the deeper meanings in culture, the present begins to make more sense. Thick Culture will help you spot the building blocks of social reality, and then come back to contemporary phenomena with a more informed (and often surprising) lens 🔮
In the Thick Culture block:
👁️ Jessica Hamel-Akré, Ph.D. asks: Does viscosity have a past? - tracing how viscosity became a cultural and moral metaphor in early medicine, and how those older ideas still echo in today’s wellness language of cleansing, detoxing, and “unblocking.”
👁️ Maitreyee Patki explores morality as a viscous force - using a practical framework of thickness and stickiness to understand how moral meanings gain force, spread, and harden in different contexts.
👁️ Rafał Hydzik takes us into modern football as a case study of cultural desynchronisation, where fast-moving commercial signs collide with slow, identity-rich traditions, producing the feeling fans capture in “the game’s gone.”
These presentations will take you beneath the surface, into the assumptions, values, and cultural “givens” that quietly shape what feels true, normal, or possible.
We’ll be sharing more speakers from the other blocks soon - Viscous Materiality, Substance of Care, Digital Gooey and Ethics Between Solid and Fluid, plus the workshops across the event.

✨ Next up in our series of Semiofest Warsaw 2026 thematic blocks: Viscosity Applied - the part of the program where our theme really gets put to work ✨
Instead of speaking about viscosity in abstract terms, this block looks at how meaning actually thickens, sticks, and resists change in real cultural and commercial contexts and why that matters for anyone working with brands, strategy, or research.
Across three talks, we’ll explore:
🍯 why some signs and symbols become stubbornly “viscous” while others remain comparatively easy to shift (Chris Barnham)
🍯 how cultural systems transform through phases of change without fully letting go of older structures (Jiakun Wang)
🍯 how certain brand cues lodge in memory and culture, shaping what Byron Sharp calls “mental availability” (Sarah Johnson)
These sessions continue to explore the question what makes meaning stick and when does that stickiness help or hinder us? 🤔
This block is especially relevant if:
👉 you work with brands and feel the tension between change and continuity,
👉 you’re interested in how cultural meaning accumulates over time,
or
👉 you’re looking for ways to connect semiotic thinking with practical marketing and strategy questions.
Viscosity Applied is less about theory for its own sake, and more about sharpening how we read, design, and work with meaning in situations where it doesn’t flow easily.
If that sounds useful, this block is one to keep an eye on. 🏌️♂️

Applied semiotics has long helped us uncover meaning beyond what people say - connecting patterns, contexts, and cultural codes. It turns cultural data into something more intuitive, more alive 🙏
At Semiofest Warsaw 2026, we want to broaden your toolbox through hands-on learning about how biosemiotics expands the field beyond culture, into the body, the senses, and the biological systems that shape how we perceive and make sense of the world. Biosemiotics explores how meaning is formed before language, through instinct, sensation, and interaction with the environment.
You will benefit from this workshop if:
🕸️ you want to design products and services that address human needs more holistically, going beyond declared needs and engaging instinctive human response
🕸️ you’re looking to bridge the gap between sustainability goals and real human engagement
🕸️ you’ve ever had the sense that meaning starts before words
What you’ll learn:
🕸️ how to use your own body as an interpretive tool
🕸️ the practical difference between semiotic and biosemiotic approaches to meaning
🕸️ how to recognize multi-layered sign systems (from molecular to symbolic)
The workshop is led by Noël Theodosiou, Emanuela Bove, and Yogi Hendlin - practitioners working at the intersection of semiotics, biosemiotics, and innovation.
Don’t worry, no prior experience is needed! Emanuela, Yogi, and Noël will guide you through everything. 🦸 🦸♂️ 🦸♀️
🎉 Good news you can join both workshops (Applied Brand Semiotics 101 by Chris Arning and the above) on the first day if you want, as they don’t overlap 🚋 🚋 🎉
Look below for more details and be sure to secure your spot.

Semiofest is getting close, and and we’re down to around 20 passes! 😬
If your work involves understanding people, culture, communication or meaning, Semiofest is designed to give you something genuinely useful! Not just inspiration, but ways of thinking you can apply straight back in your work.
🗓️ Over four days in Warsaw, Semiofest brings together semioticians, researchers, strategists, designers, marketers, anthropologists and creatives to explore how meaning works and how to work with it better, especially in complex, fast‑moving contexts.
What people value most about Semiofest:
🔨 Practical tools and fresh lenses that sharpen how you read culture and behaviour
🤝 Workshops where theory clicks and confidence grows through doing
🍵 Conversations that challenge and energise, not just presentations
🦄 A rare mix of disciplines and perspectives, creating insights you don’t get in siloed events
👐 A warm, curious community where exchange comes naturally
This year, all of this happens in Warsaw in May, hosted at , a place that perfectly matches the open, un‑conference spirit of Semiofest.
✨ If Semiofest has been on your list, this is a good moment to stop postponing it ✨
