Every Blackburl piece begins with respect for the material and the story it carries.

Through French craftsmanship and New Zealand provenance, we create future heirlooms designed to endure for generations.

There are many beautiful things in the world.

Very few become part of a family's legacy.

That is why we create.

Not simply to make something beautiful...

..but to create something worthy of being treasured, cared for, and one day, handed to the next generation.

The Maker.

Romain sees something in timber that others might miss.
To him, every piece of wood was once alive.
It has history.
It has movement.
It has a story.
His role is not to overpower it.
It is to reveal its beauty.

If you're new here, welcome to Blackburl.

Behind every Blackburl piece is French craftsman Romain Baumann, whose work is guided by a simple belief:

Exceptional pieces should tell a story, last generations, and become part of a family's legacy.

Over the past two years, Blackburl has quietly found its direction.

What began as a passion for creating one-of-a-kind pieces has grown into something much deeper.

From this point forward, we'd like to share more than the finished work.

This journal will tell the story of the people, the materials, the craftsmanship, and the values behind every piece we create.

Bienvenue. Welcome to the next chapter.

Hi guys, just wanted to share this today as we kick off the Orton Bradley table project.

Peeling back the bark on this walnut slab… and there it is — 200 years of history staring back at us.

Hidden beneath the surface, the timber carries the scars of an old fire. This tree stood through it all — decades, maybe centuries ago — and kept growing. You can literally read its story in the grain.

Moments like this make you realise… this isn’t just timber. It’s history.
It makes me feel a bit like a historian uncovering something that’s been waiting a long time to be seen.

A piece close to my heart.
A collaboration between my Father and I - his design and my ex*****on.

In place at my family home in Rouvenac, France.

Let me introduce Venari
a coffee table shaped by craft,
inspired by the quiet elegance of New Zealand’s deer roaming through our valleys.

There are pieces you place in a room…
and then there are pieces that transform it.

Venari is born from stories written in wood:
locally sourced Tasmanian Blackwood with its deep, flowing grain,
resin repurposed from my own studio work,
and legs carved from recycled timber from the original Millbrook villas—
legs that echo the stance of a deer, poised and graceful,
a small tribute to Mother Nature’s design.

It’s not loud.
It doesn’t need to be.
Yet the moment it enters a space, the whole room feels
more intentional, more grounded, more alive.
This is a Blackburlstudio signature piece .
