Indigo dying in the beautiful highlands of Central Java.

Nestled in hills outside Tokyo lays the beautiful artists town of Fujino. The lovely Taku gave us a wonderful Katazome workshop in his traditional home. Katazome is the ancient Japanese art of stencil art, using rice paste as a resist. Checkout the amazing Indigo vats.

So much gratitude to Agus Ismoyo and Nia Fliam, amazing master Batik designers for being so generous with their knowledge, time, studio and delicious food! Fabulous time spent with them in Yogyakarta. I can't wait to come back again!

My daughter Saf and I had a fabulous experience learning the art of Hmong batik from the only remaining practitioner in Luang Prabang, Mae Thao Zazong. Hmong batik is all done free-hand using wax, a blade-like implement & a steady hand. The batik work the Hmong produce is gorgeous!
