Logie Timber

Earlier this year, Malcolm got in touch looking for some ash and Western Red Cedar for a canoe he was building at home in Glen Urquhart.

The finished result is this, a 16-foot canoe, built largely from locally grown timber.

Most of the hull is Lawson cypress felled in Glen Urquhart and milled by Malcolm himself. The contrasting strips are Western Red Cedar from Logie, while the full-length gunwales and seat frames were made from ash boards supplied by us. Even the decks, handles and thwarts are made from locally felled lime.

Malcolm originally came to us after struggling to find the timber he needed elsewhere, so it was particularly nice to receive this photo once the project was finished.

A brilliant piece of work, and a great example of what can happen when good timber ends up in the hands of someone who knows what to do with it.

We’re taking the shop on the road again this Saturday.

Logie Timber Supplies will be at Carve Carrbridge, home of the Scottish Open Chainsaw Carving Competition.

We’ll be bringing a good selection from the shop with us, including Carhartt and Ridgeline, alongside a mix of show offers and end-of-season reductions on selected lines.

But mostly, we’re looking forward to a day surrounded by timber, tools and some seriously skilled carving.

Earlier this year, pupils from Muirtown Primary School in Inverness got in touch while taking part in the Climate Smarter Project. A challenge which asked them to think about how a more sustainable school could be designed and built.

As part of the project, they were looking at where the materials for their school might come from, including the timber.

We were delighted to help by supplying some local Douglas Fir for the pupils to work with and learn from as they built their model Eco-School.

And they didn’t just build it, they went on to present their project at the Highland Celebration of STEM at the Kingsmills Hotel, where they came home with a STEM Challenge Trophy. 🏆

For us, this is exactly the kind of thing we love being involved in.

Helping young people understand where timber comes from, why provenance matters, and how the materials we choose can shape the buildings and landscapes of the future feels pretty important.

A huge well done to all the pupils involved and thank you to Muirtown Primary for letting us play a small part in it.

Judging by the photos, there may be a few future makers, engineers and foresters among them yet. 🌲🪵🔨

Only a couple of days to go now until the LTS Logie 100 open day.

There’ll be woodworking demonstrations, outdoor cooking, historic chainsaws from the local folk museum, traditional hand tools, the two-man saw competition and plenty happening around the shopthroughout the day.

It’s shaping up to be a good gathering of people, stories, old tools and practical skills, the sort of things that have always felt at home around places like this.

Forestry tools changed quickly over the years.

Some became safer, lighter and faster. Others simply became part of history.

As part of the open day, the local folk museum will be bringing a display of chainsaws through the years, alongside demonstrations of our long chainsaw in the yard.

Over the last couple of weeks, Ollie has been sharing our first experience of running oak through the larger kiln.

The good news? It worked.

The result is a workshop full of kiln-dried oak, now stacked and ready for its next project.

There's a fair bit of it sitting in the dry store at the moment, so if you're looking for oak, feel free to call in and have a browse.

We're looking for a new Machine Operator & Production Operative to join the team at Logie Timber.

This role involves working across the sawmill and yard, operating machinery, handling timber and supporting production throughout the site.

But we're also looking for someone who enjoys improving the way things are done.

Someone who notices opportunities, solves problems and takes ownership of their work.

Training will be provided and previous sawmill experience is welcome, but not essential.
