These 17 floor girts are 7” x 9” timbers, longest being about 16 ft. They sit atop 12 concrete columns and support the 2nd story floor system and timber frame structure.

Cristobal wood is hard, heavy and strong, nonetheless exceptionally workable. It also has an amazing sweet, caramel like fragrance when worked on and when final pieces are left unfinished.
Aside from its beauty and smell, it has a unique sound quality, reason why it was traditionally used in Costa Rica for the keys on Marimbas, as well as clever Ox Cart builders using them on the wooden wheels to make for a unique musical sound as the “carretas” strolled by.

Cristobal trees are highly protected in Costa Rica now. I was lucky enough to get my hands on some for these console tables from an uprooted tree in Cabuya, Nicoya Peninsula.
