The 1st reheat took ~10 minutes. The first trial run of the final reheat system choice was performed using rice from the University of Waterloo Plaza. The rice was kept at room temperature and then placed in the 75x75x45 mm container. The temperature was raised to ~70C which is the desired temperature keeping food safe for consumption. The convection that takes place during the reheat process was very noticeable, reminding us to really take care and be mindful of the pressure build up.

Forming for form factor. Different designs were explored to produce a casing that allows optimal space for the electrical components, maximum heating transfer, ease of use. Multiple prototypes were build to compare shape factors using FDA approved food safe plastics and other materials that can sustain the required temperature. 8 versions with major iterations were designed out of which a design that allows users to remove and wash the food container with out the need to make the rest of system to be washing machine friendly, section heating system into its own compartment classified has container-case and the controller circuit and power supply to have its own module which would allow the user to have the option of what to carry and a stand-alone heating stations. Dont worry the ductape was just for the prototype (it was the best part of the design though)

Heat Distribution. Ensuring that heat is distributed evenly throughout the lunch is very essential. Multiple tests were carried out with different wire sizes, increasing wire spacing, different winding styles. All tests were done at different voltages to study how circuit behaves and the change in power consumption. Thereafter, the best arrangement was chosen and optimized to draw the least possible amount of current. The next step is now to build a winding method to ensure that windings are easily reproducible on all sides with consistency and aesthetically pleasing forms.

Protection from heat contact. One of the many challenges we faced is insulation around the circuit melting away and causing a short-circuit. The mechanical team engineered a configuration that would keep the circuit at a lower temperature while not sacrificing the efficiency of the heating system. Multiple experiments were carried out to find the effective thickness of insulation to be placed in-between the container and heating circuit. Material selection was done thoroughly to ensure that it’s FDA approved (food-safe) and can sustain the anticipated temperature. Furthermore, implementing this has further aided in improving the heat transfer efficiency and lowering the overall power consumption.
