Why name a mattress company "Black Sheep"?
When we started out, we realized the bedding world was mostly built around one-size-fits-all options and distant supply chains. We wanted to take a different path - one centered on natural materials, local trade craftsmanship, and personalized comfort built right here in Calgary.
Being the black sheep isn't about standing out for the sake of it. It’s about doing things by hand, taking time with the details, and building a bed tailored specifically to the person sleeping on it.

Pro: Breakfast in bed on a Sunday.
Con: Crumbs in the organic cotton weave.
We’ll let you decide if the risk is worth the reward. (Though we always vote for the croissant).

If you haven't tried the Scandinavian Sleep Method yet, consider this your official sign to swipe through.
In Nordic countries, sharing a mattress with two separate duvets instead of one giant comforter is the standard - and for good reason.
From eliminating midnight blanket tug-of-war to letting each person pick their ideal warmth layer, it’s one of the simplest ways to upgrade your sleep quality without compromising on sharing a bed.
Same bed, tailored comfort for both of you.
Have you tried two duvets on your bed, or are you staying loyal to one big comforter?

Waking up with a stiff neck that takes half a cup of coffee to work out?
Your mattress supports 75% of your body, but your pillow carries the remaining 25% - specifically your cervical spine.
If your pillow is too high, it tilts your head upward and strains your neck muscles all night. If it’s too flat, your head drops backward, collapsing your airway.
The goal is neutral alignment: when lying on your side, your nose, chin, and sternum should form a straight, horizontal line parallel to the bed. A quick adjustment to your pillow loft often solves morning tension instantly.

If you’re going to put your name on something, make sure every stitch earns it.
We take as much pride in the seams you don't notice as the details you do. Every Black Sheep trim and cover is sewn right here in our workshop - because building a bed that lasts starts with doing the small things properly.

Sometimes the first thing people notice isn't the mattresses.
It's the atmosphere.
Customers often tell us they feel more relaxed the moment they walk through the door.
We designed it to be a place where you can take your time, explore our handcrafted collection, and leave feeling confident in your decision - not rushed into one.

The body knows more about rest than we often give it credit for. 🖤 The National Institute of General Medical Sciences notes that circadian rhythms help guide the body’s 24-hour cycle, including when we feel awake and when we feel ready for sleep. We build with that natural rhythm in mind, using materials chosen to support the place you return to each night.

Natural latex and synthetic foam can feel very different in a mattress.
Take a closer look at both materials and why natural latex is one we continue to choose at Black Sheep. Made from the sap of rubber trees, it offers a supportive feel while staying responsive over time.
It is one of the ways we bring more thoughtful materials into our work, while staying connected to a more sustainable way of making.

We’re always grateful when you take the time to share your experience with us.
Your words help us understand how the pieces we make are being lived with, long after they leave our workshop.
Thank you for letting us be part of your rest. 🖤
